Call for Researchers – Indigenous Past, Sustainable Futures
Nepal Picture Library is pleased to announce the commencement of a new project, “Indigenous Pasts, Sustainable Futures”. We initiate this project as part of NPL’s ongoing endeavor to document, archive and present Nepal’s marginalized histories. As with our other projects, we are looking for innovative ways to engage with our pasts. For this project, we will explore traditional knowledge systems, design and material cultures, as well as a diverse selection of material objects, to examine indigenous forms of conservation and sustainability. Our goal is to archive indigenous pasts by exploring material objects as primary witnesses to history.
Nepal Picture Library is looking to hire researchers who can travel, document and produce writing on up to four out-of-valley locations for the project. The position would require time commitment for up to 3 months starting July 2019. Preference will be given to researchers with a grasp of material and visual culture, art criticism and art history. Candidates must speak, read and write in Nepali fluently. As this project is also an attempt to identify and amplify local efforts for eco-justice and democracy, we desire candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to reimagining conversations on sustainability from the perspective of marginalized indigenous voices.

नेपाल पिक्चर लाईब्रेरीलाई (Nepal Picture Library – NPL) आफ्नो नयाँ काम ‘आदिवासी अतित, दिगो भविष्य’ शुरूवात हुन गइरहेको जानकारी दिन पाउँदा खुशी लागेको छ। उक्त काम, NPLले निरन्तर प्रयासकासाथ नेपालका सिमान्तकृत इतिहासहरूको दस्तावेज तयार गर्न, अभिलेख राख्न र प्रस्तुत गर्नको लागि गरेको पहलको एक हिस्सा हो। हाम्रा अन्य कामहरूजस्तै यसमा पनि हाम्रा अतितसँग क्रियाशिल हुनको लागि हामी नयाँ (नविन) शैलीहरूको खोज गर्दैछौं। यस कार्यको लागि, हामी परम्परागत ज्ञान व्यवस्था, योजना र भौतिक सँस्कृतिको खोज गर्नेछौं। यस खोजको लागि, संरक्षण र दिगोपनाको आदिवासी स्वरूपहरूको अध्ययन गर्न भौतिक वस्तुहरूको बहुल छनौट पनि पर्नेछ। हाम्रो उद्देश्य भनेको भौतिक वस्तुहरुलाई इतिहासको प्रथम साक्षीहरूको रुपमा अध्ययन गर्दै आदवासी अतितलाई संग्रहित गर्नु हो। यस कार्यको लागि नेपाल पिक्चर लाईब्रेरीले शोधकर्ताहरूको खोजी गरिरहेको छ। यि शोधकर्ताहरूले यस कामको लागि काठमाण्डौ उपत्यका बाहिरका स्थानहरूमा जाने, दस्तावेज वा अभिलेख तयार गर्ने, र लिखित रचना तयार पार्नुपर्नेछ।
उक्त कामको लागि शोधकर्ताले बढिमा ४ स्थानहरू जानुपर्नेछ। शोधकर्ताले यी सब कार्य ३ महिनामा गर्नुपर्नेछ। जुूलाई २०१९ देखी शुरू हुने यो शोधकार्यको समय ३ महिनाको हुनेछ। भौतिक र दृश्य सँस्कृति, कला समालोचना र कला इतिहासको विषयमा ज्ञान वा दखल भएका शोधकर्ताहरूलाई प्राथमिकता दिइनेछ। यो शोधकार्यको अर्को उद्देश्य वातावरणिय न्याय र लोकतन्त्र सम्बन्धी स्थानिय प्रयासहरूको पहिचान गर्नु र तिनलाई सशक्त बनाउनु पनि हो। तसर्थ, सिमान्तकृत आदिवासी आवाजहरूको दृष्टिकोणबाट दिगोपना सम्बन्धी छलफल-बहसहरू प्रस्तुत गर्नसक्ने प्रतिबद्दता देखाउनसक्ने वा देखाएका शोधकर्ताहरूसँग काम गर्न हामी उत्सुक छौं।

Nepal Picture Library is proud to announce Dewan Rai and Yutsha Dahal as our 2019 Research Fellowship recipients for our upcoming project Indigenous Pasts, Sustainable Futures!
Dewan Rai’s reporting on issues of human rights, social justice and Nepali politics has established him as one of the most involved and credible journalists of Nepal. Through this fellowship, he hopes to delve deeper into the consequences of consumer culture for Nepal’s indigenous communities.
Having completed her Master’s from the School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Yutsha Dahal backs her interest in alternative approaches to history with a solid training in visual culture and performance studies. As an NPL fellow, she is excited to see what new insights can be uncovered about indigeneity and sustainability through the prism of visual and material culture.
